Here is the honest truth: I hate DIY. There! I said it! I am not a fun, free-spirited hippy girl who is constantly making her own blankets, sweaters, toothpaste, and deodorant. However, I also really hate the idea of ingesting harmful chemicals in the foods I eat or through the products I use. I also despise needless or wasteful packaging. These feelings are in direct contradiction with my lack of enthusiasm for DIY. Here is the deal:
DIY allows us to take part in the development of the products we use on a day to day basis. We have a front row seat to their birth so to speak and seeing as we contribute to their direct compilation, we know exactly what they contain (and what they lack i.e. PACKAGING!).
It’s incredibly empowering to make your own products as you know you are not paying for water, air, or any toxic chemicals but instead the ingredients you choose to use. However, it must be said that many DIY’s are a tedious process. I’ll be honest. 90% of the time I am going to run to the store and pick up the most natural and affordable option I can find. That said, 10% of the time I will be using this body butter recipe and it will make me feel like I’m doing something good.
This body lotion is filled with wholesome ingredients like shea butter, sweet almond oil, and coconut oil and scented with sweet orange essential oil. This incredible recipe also includes cocoa butter which results in a dreamy, chocolate-orange scent.
While making this body butter will never be as easy as running down to the drugstore and picking up a plastic bottle of lotion, the small amount of labor and ingredient-sourcing involved is totally worth it. There is nothing more luxurious than the feeling of homemade body lotion on your skin after a warm shower. Knowing that the ingredients are clean and ethically-sourced is just an added bonus!Print

- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
- Yield: about 3 cups 1x
- Category: DIY
1 c shea butter
1/2 c cocoa butter
1/2 c coconut oil
1/2 c sweet almond oil
1 tbsp arrowroot powder (optional)
5-10 drops sweet orange essential oil
1. Place shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil into a double boiler. If you so not have a double boiler, put ingredients into a glass bowl and place over a small pot filled with 1-2 inches of water. Turn stove to medium heat and stir contents of bowl or double boiler until everything is completely melted.
2. Remove bowl from stove and place in the refrigerator to allow the contents to firm up and cool completely, about 2 hours. Once mixture is firm, remove from refrigerator and allow to soften for about ten minutes.
3. Finally, take a hand mixer and whip until the lotion reaches the desired consistency. If you like your body lotion to be on the thicker side, add in 1 tbsp arrowroot powder. Add 5-10 drops of sweet orange essential oil and mix to combine. Lotion can keep in a sealable, airtight jar for up to a month.
